A bespoke chunky redwood shelf finished clear to retain the natural colour and grain of the timber, paired with powder-coated steel brackets for a simple industrial look.
Behind the build
This bespoke chunky redwood shelf was made to provide practical display space while adding a substantial piece of natural timber to the room.
Redwood was chosen for the shelf and worked into a thick, solid profile with softened edges and a clean finish. Rather than staining or heavily colouring the timber, a clear finish was used to protect the surface while retaining the natural warmth, grain and variation of the wood.
The shelf was paired with black powder-coated steel brackets, creating a simple industrial-style contrast against the lighter timber. The brackets remain visible as part of the design rather than being hidden, adding another detail without taking attention away from the shelf itself.
The generous depth and thickness give the piece plenty of presence while also making it practical for displaying artwork, ornaments and other larger pieces. In the finished room, the combination of natural redwood and black steel sits particularly well against the simple white wall and gives the display a clean, uncluttered backdrop.
The result is a straightforward but distinctive piece of bespoke shelving — solid, functional and made specifically to suit the space, with the timber and industrial hardware providing most of the character.
