These bespoke side tables were made from solid iroko, paired with black steel hairpin legs from The Hairpin Leg Company for a simple, modern finish.
One of the most striking things about this pair is the natural variation within the timber itself. Although every board is the same species, the iroko runs through a wide range of colours, from lighter golden tones through to much deeper browns.
Rather than trying to hide that variation, the boards were arranged to make a feature of it. The contrasting tones give each tabletop its own character while still allowing the two pieces to work together as a matching pair.
The slim black hairpin legs keep the overall design light and contemporary, allowing the timber to remain the main focus. The finished tables are simple, practical pieces with plenty of natural character — and a good example of just how much variation can exist within a single species of hardwood.
